Planning for a dog friendly holiday

Because holidays are much better when your four-legged friend has a great time too.

Dog friendly holidays are a wonderful way to enjoy quality time with the whole family, but planning them can feel an overwhelming task. From giving you a packing guide and suggestions for days out to handy tips and tricks to make sure you're as prepared as possible, we're here to help you plan a dog friendly break that you and your pooch will never forget.

We know that holidays just aren't the same without your canine companion beside you, so we welcome dogs at all of our holiday parks across Northern England and Scotland.

Planning a dog friendly UK holiday

Before booking your holiday, be sure to double check the policies of your accommodation to be aware of how many dogs you can bring, any extra charges and restricted breeds. Once your accommodation is booked, the next step is to make sure your dog's vaccinations, microchip records and flea/tick treatments are up to date and, if not, book an appointment with the vet. If your dog requires any regular medication, make sure you have enough to cover your holiday.

It's also a good idea to research local seasonal restrictions, particularly if you're planning to visit the beach with your four-legged friend. Many beaches restrict dogs during peak months (April-September), so it's worth making a note of where you'll be able to bring your pooch during your stay. If you already have an itinerary of dog friendly days out, now's the time to book any tickets or arrival slots.

Researching pet insurance for travel is also a great idea if your dog isn't already covered and can give you extra peace of mind.

Keeping your dog cool on holiday

If you're planning a trip with your pooch in the warmer months, knowing how to keep them cool is essential. Open your accommodation windows where possible to create air flow, keep blinds shut and make sure to never leave your dog unattended in your caravan or lodge. Try to walk them earlier in the morning and later in the evening, always carry fresh water, and stick to shade as much as possible to keep your dog comfortable while on holiday.

What to pack for a dog friendly holiday?

Travelling with your dog

The Highway Code requires that dogs must be restrained when travelling in cars, either with a seat belt harness, dog guard or crate, so make sure you have the necessary equipment to travel safely.

Plan to stop every 1-2 hours for water and toilet breaks, and research ahead of time which motorway services are dog friendly, with places for your pooch to stretch their legs. Moto and Welcome Break services are good options for dogs.

Remember to never leave your dog in a hot car unattended. Try to find shade and create airflow where possible for a comfortable journey.
