Walks in South East of Scotland
Take a look at our favourite walks in South East Scotland, from casual walks through the Scottish borders to coastal walks near North Berwick & Dunbar.
There is something for the whole family to enjoy and remember to share your favourites on our Facebook page! With four holiday parks all close to the amazing landscapes found on the Berwickshire coast and in the shadows of the Lammermuir Hills, it’s no wonder so many people looking for walking holidays choose to visit us.
Berwickshire coastal path
With the breathtaking coast right on our doorstep, it’s easy to see why so many people take to the Berwickshire Coastal Path. The scenery is stunning, and it can be accessed from within a mile of three of our parks; Coldingham Bay, Scoutscroft and Pease Bay. Split into four main sections, the 48km trail starts at Cockburnspath near Pease Bay. It then snakes down the coast to end in Berwick-Upon-Tweed. The first section from Cockburnspath to Dowlaw allows you to view the beautiful Cove harbour and runs across the top of Pease Bay itself. Before heading south past the turning for the famous Siccar Point. This part of the path is a lengthy 12km, but can be broken down into sections should you wish. The third section is the St Abbs to Eyemouth route, which is easily accessible from both Coldingham Bay and Scoutscroft Leisure Parks. The route is only 6km and takes you from the harbour village of St Abbs to Coldingham Bay beach. It then descends along the rocky shore to end in Eyemouth itself. With breathtaking views across the coast and country you may be lucky to spot a huge variety of wildlife including seals, dolphins and roe deer.
Lammermuir Hills
Whilst staying at Thurston Manor you can take in the history of the area by walking the Whiteadder Reservoir to Priestlaw Hill circuit. This 11km route takes you down the Herring Road, an old path used by the fishwives of Dunbar to deliver fish to the market town of Lauder in the Borders. As it’s a circuit, the walk will return you back to the side of Whiteadder Reservoir after an enjoyable walk seeing ruins of old. You can add extra walking to this route by heading up the track leading to Priestlaw Hill itself. Why not take in the views from the summit.
Southern Upland Way
The Southern Upland Way runs across the south of Scotland, from Portpatrick in the south west to Cockburnspath in the east. Cockburnspath, the village closest to Pease Bay, is where a number of our visitors often embark on the route. We have had guests staying who begin the full 214 mile walk from here, or just carry out the final Lauder to Cockburnspath route. At 32 miles, this section of the walk is still an impressive feat, and snakes the south of the Lammermuir Hills.
St Abbs Head
A visit to Berwickshire wouldn’t be complete without heading to St Abbs and taking in the breath taking views of the coastline. This nature reserve features many great walks and our favourite has to be the 4 mile route to St Abbs Head. This walk takes you around Mire Loch, and up to the hills of the reserve.
John Muir Way
Another coast to coast route, some 134 miles long, running from Port Glasgow to Dunbar. This route is again designed to be done over a number of days, with the final stretch taking you to Dunbar, close to our Thurston Manor Leisure Park. The final section, North Berwick to Dunbar is easily accessible to the park and gives you the opportunity to climb Berwick Law, offering fantastic views across the coast and over towards Edinburgh. This route is 15 miles long but has shorter, circular routes leading from the main path if you want a leisurely stroll.
